STORRS, Conn. – The UConn men's soccer team defeated the Manhattan Jaspers, 5-1 on Sunday night at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium. After conceding an early goal to the Jaspers, the Huskies went on to score five unanswered goals, three coming in the second half. UConn remains unbeaten this season with a 2-0-2 record.
Redshirt-sophomore goalkeeper Kyle Durham made his fourth start of the season in between the sticks for the Huskies. Durham made a career high seven saves in the win.
The first half opened with a flurry of activity from the Huskies tallying six shots in the 15 minutes, but it was Manhattan who opened the scoring in the 17th minute off a counterattack. The goal is just the second conceded by the Huskies defense this season.
It took UConn just 61 seconds to find an equalizer as senior forward Charlie Holmes headed home his first goal of the season, knotting the game at 1-1. Freshman midfielder Preston Alessio tallied his first career assist on the goal. Alessio finished with two assists on the night, recording his first collegiate multi-point game.
UConn took the lead just four minutes later off another header coming from redshirt-sophomore Sabri Hanni, his first goal of the season, putting the Huskies up 2-1. Hanni finished with a team high seven shots, logging a goal and an assist, his second career three-point game.
UConn took the one goal advantage into the half, with the Huskies owning an 11-4 advantage in shots.
Senior forward Austin Brummett scored his second goal of the season off a corner kick in the 64th minute on a flicked header at the near post, giving the Huskies a 3-1 lead.
Just two minutes later, graduate midfielder Balthazar Saunders extended the Huskies lead to 4-1, scoring his second goal of the season on a beautiful team goal from the UConn attack.
Senior captain Nicolas Tomerius capped off the Huskies dominant performance in the second half with his first goal of the season in the final minute of the match, giving the Huskies a four-goal advantage, 5-1. UConn has now scored 4+ goals in a game for the fourth time during Chris Gbandi's tenure as head coach.
