Volleyball Completes Weekend Sweep in Binghamton

VESTAL, N.Y.- Â UConn women's volleyball completed a clean sweep of the Bearcat Classic hosted by Binghamton University on Saturday, defeating the host Bearcats in five sets and taking down Fordham in straight sets in their second match of the day.
Emma Werkmeister (Victor, N.Y.) had two early kills to pace the Huskies. After Binghamton put together four points in a row, Audrey Rome (Sandwich, Ill.) Â and Grace Maria (Arlington, Va.) continued yesterday's strong play with two kills apiece to knot the score at 10-10. Errors on the attack and the service line put UConn behind 16-12 in the frame, but the Huskies responded with two kills from Maria and Jess Perry (Independence, Tn.) to tie up the set at 17 apiece. The teams traded points in a tightly contested opening frame, with the Bearcats holding on for a 25-23 first set victory.
The Huskies started strong in the second with two aces from Maria to build an 8-4 lead. The visitors exploded for a 6-0 run, with Rome firing in 3 consecutive kills to extend the UConn advantage to 15-7. The Bearcats cut into the advantage, with two kills from Hannah Olmstead bringing Binghamton within 5 at 18-13. UConn responded, with two kills each from Werkmeister and Perry. Rome's ninth kill of the day lifted UConn to a 25-18 second set win, evening the match at 1 set each.
In similar fashion to yesterday's victory, UConn dominated the third set, starting the frame with an 11-0 run. Maria chipped in two more aces, and Werkmeister continued to conduct the Husky attack to build the large advantage. Rome and Doga Kutlu (Ankara, Turkey) combined for blocks on two separate occasions to stretch the UConn lead to 15-5. The Bearcats took five of the next six points, but the combination of Werkmeister on the attack and two aces from Isabella Suhy (Toledo, Oh.) helped the Huskies take a 2-1 lead in the match.
Binghamton returned the favor in the opening moments of the fourth set, jumping ahead of UConn 11-3. Werkmeister, Suhy and Eli Adams (Clarkston, Mi.) helped UConn string together 6 points in a row to bring the Huskies within six at 18-12. The visitors continued to chip into the lead, with a block from Adams pushing Binghamton to call a timeout still leading 20-16. UConn got within two points, but the Bearcats held on for a 25-23 fourth set victory. Â
In the decisive fifth set, the Huskies came out firing early, going ahead 5-1 as Rome set a new career-high in kills to push the Bearcats into a timeout. Werkmeister shouldered the UConn offense in the fifth with three quick kills, adding to her game-high 21 on the afternoon. Loren Winn (Dallas, Tx.) completed the victory with two consecutive kills as UConn defeated Binghamton in five sets.
UConn kept the positive momentum going in their afternoon matchup against Fordham, with Werkmeister leading the charge with five kills and an ace to kick start the Huskies to a 15-6 lead. Aces from McKenna Brand (Lucas, Tx.) and Brenna Wyman (Louisville, Ky.) pushed UConn out to a 19-11 advantage in the first set. A smattering of Fordham errors and another termination from Maria boosted UConn to a first set victory, 25-17.
Werkmeister and Maria kept the pressure on in the second as the Huskies leapt in front 9-6. Fordham closed the gap to a slim-one point advantage at 13-12, with Audrey Brown igniting the Ram attack. UConn responded in a big way, with five straight points after kills from Werkmeister, Adams, and Perry. Â The Huskies capitalized on consecutive Fordham errors to take the second set 25-15.
With eyes on their third straight win, Rome, Werkmeister and Perry helped the Huskies construct a 9-6 lead in the third set. UConn kept a slim lead throughout the frame, with Kutlu and Werkmeister chipping in aces to reup the margin to 19-14. Wyman and Brand continued the UConn domination on the service line, and Rome sealed it with her 10th kill of the day as UConn swept Fordham to move to 3-0 on the season.
Inside the Numbers:
The Huskies recorded double-digit aces in both wins on Saturday, finishing with 25 total on the weekend. Adams set new career-highs in kills (6) and blocks (4) on the weekend. Maria tied a career-high with 12 kills against Binghamton to cap off an impressive weekend. Rome set a new career-high with 13 kills against Binghamton. The Huskies continued their nonconference dominance from last season, winning their last 17 matches outside the Big East.
