Huskies Bounce Back With Win Over Providence

STORRS, Conn. – UConn women's volleyball (16-6, 5-5 BIG EAST) defeated the Providence Friars (10-13, 1-9 BIG EAST) in four sets (25-22, 22-25, 25-20, 25-20) on Sunday afternoon at the UConn Volleyball Center.
UConn secured a 25-22 victory in the first set against the Friars, leveraging a balanced attack. Emma Werkmeister led the charge with multiple kills, receiving consistent setups from Doga Kutlu. The Friars managed to keep the set competitive, but the Huskies maintained their edge. The set concluded with Audrey Rome's decisive kill, once again assisted by Kutlu, sealing the win in the first set for the Huskies.
Providence secured the second set with a 25-22 win, building a strong lead early on. The Huskies responded with a series of service aces from Werkmeister, narrowing the score to 20-18. However, Providence maintained their advantage with decisive kills to conclude the second set.
UConn emerged victorious in the third set with a 25-20 win, bolstered by Werkmeister's strong performance, including four consecutive service aces, pushing the score from 17-10 to 23-10. Earlier in the set, Providence kept the game close, narrowing the gap to 9-7. However, UConn's consistent service game, highlighted by Brenna Wyman's ace and Kutlu's several assists, maintained their lead. The set concluded with a service ace by Maggie Carley, securing the win for the Huskies in the third set.
The fourth set between UConn and Providence saw a tight contest early on, with Providence securing an initial lead at 6-2 following consecutive points. The Huskies responded, narrowing the gap with a service ace by Grace Maria and a series of errors by Providence, eventually tying the score at 12-12. UConn then gained momentum, highlighted by a service ace from Carley, propelling the Huskies to a 21-17 advantage. Hanna Tylska played a pivotal role in the closing stages, delivering three consecutive kills to secure the fourth set for UConn with a 25-20 victory.
Werkmeister led the team with 15 kills and added a program match record 10 service aces, contributing significantly to the overall 26 points she accumulated. Kutlu facilitated the offense with 38 assists while also anchoring the defense with 15 digs. Rome recorded 12 kills and contributed defensively with three total blocks. Tylska maintained a strong presence at the net, registering 14 kills with a hitting percentage of .345.

The next challenge for the Huskies will take them to Queens, NY, where they will face off against St. John's. The matchup is set for Friday, October 31, with the action beginning at 7 p.m.
