Softball Close out Weekend With Sixth Straight Win

HONOLULU, Hawaii – UConn softball beat Cleveland State, 8-3 on Sunday afternoon, going 6-0 in the Rainbow Wahine Classic.
Payton Kinney got the nod in the weekend finale, making her sixth start of the season for the Huskies. She went 4.1 innings giving up one run on only one hit with six strikeouts.
UConn opened the scoring in the second inning as Grace Jenkins put the Huskies in front with a ground ball to score Giuliana Abruscato from third base.
The Huskies broke the game open in the fourth inning scoring four runs on four hits, making it 5-0. Rosie Garcia got it started with a double down the left field line, scoring Grace Jenkins from second base. Hope Jenkins followed Garcia with a single up the middle, scoring Jana Sanden and Garcia. Haley Coupal capped off the inning with a single to center field, scoring pinch runner Rayah Snyder from second base.
Cleveland State responded with three runs in the top half of the fifth inning, trimming into the Huskies lead at 5-3.
Meghan O'Neil came on in relief for Kinney in the fifth inning making her fifteenth appearance of the season. She finished out the game in the circle going 2.2 innings giving up two runs on three hits with a pair of strikeouts.
UConn came right back in the bottom half of the fifth inning, scoring three runs, putting the lead back to five. Grace Jenkins knocked in her second run of the game with a double to left center, scoring Lexi Hastings from second base. Hope Jenkins followed her twin sister with a double of her own, this time to right center, scoring Jenkins and Garcia.
O'Neil held the Cleveland State offense at bay giving the Huskies a perfect 6-0 record for the weekend, putting UConn's overall record at 10-11.
