Softball wins seventh straight game

STORRS, Conn. – The UConn softball team opened BIG EAST play with a 2-1 victory over the DePaul Blue Demons on Friday afternoon.
Payton Kinney earned her seventh start of the season in the circle for the Huskies. She picked up her third win of the year pitching 5.0 innings only giving up two hits and one run with five strikeouts.
Kinney's only mistake of the day came in the first inning as DePaul got their lone run on a solo home run off the bat of Brooke Johnson.
UConn tied the game in the third inning off the bat of Grace Jenkins. The sophomore knocked in her 22nd run of the season, singling to left field, scoring Lexi Hastings from second base.
Grace Jenkins went on to give the Huskies the lead in the fifth inning on another single, this time to right field, scoring Giuliana Abruscato from second base.
Hope Jenkins came on in relief for Kinney in the sixth inning, making her seventh appearance of the season. She tossed one scoreless inning only throwing nine pitches.
Meghan O'Neil came in to lock up the win, earning her third save of the season in a shutdown 1-2-3 inning.
The Huskies win marks the third straight season they have won their conference opener.

Game two of the series is scheduled for Saturday, March 16 at 1:00pm at Burrill Family Field in Storrs.
