HookC Suffers First Setback, 2-1, vs. Indiana State

TAMPA, Fla. - The UConn baseball team (2-1) suffered its first defeat in the 2024 season with a 2-1 loss to Indiana State on a rainy Saturday afternoon at the USF Baseball Stadium.Â
The Huskies continued to pitch the ball well on Saturday with starting pitcher Stephen Quigley tossing 5.2 strong innings, allowing one run on five hits, zero walks and punched out five. All three UConn starting pitchers worked into the sixth inning on Opening Weekend.
UConn struggled to string offense together against Jacob Pruit, with the right-hander logging six shutout innings and striking out nine Huskies. UConn did threaten against him in the second with back-to-back singles to begin the frame but a double play and ground out ended the rally.Â
The Sycamores responded with a run in the second after Dominic Listi doubled and advanced to third on a wild pitch. The Sycamores left fielder scored the first run of the game on an RBI ground out.Â
The score remained the same until the seventh, after a one-out walk was issued by left-hander Braden Quinn, Henry Brown delivered a two-out RBI double against Joe Carrea to push the lead to 2-0.
The Huskies finally came alive in the ninth with a double off the bat of Paul Tammaro followed by a single from Jake Studley. With runners at the corners and no outs, Maddix Dalena grounded out to first to bring a run across to make it 2-1.
After Tyler Minick flew out to the right field fence for out number two, Studley was stranded at third on a Matt Garbowski fly out to end the ballgame.Â
UConn finishes the first weekend of the season 2-1 after playing three games in the span of 24Â hours.Â

- UConn starting pitchers combined to allow two runs in 17.1 innings this weekend.
