HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The UConn Women's Lacrosse team edged out Hofstra University in their third overtime thriller of the season on Tuesday evening on Long Island. The Huskies have won all three of the overtime games they've played.
Opening draw went to the Huskies, senior Rylee Brown controlled the ball and took it up field. While the Huskies took the first possession, it was Hofstra who scored first on an unassisted goal from senior Katie Kelly at 12:31. Kerry Walser of the Pride followed that goal up with one of her own at 11:43. The Huskies would go on a scoring spree starting with senior, Kate Shaffer at 9:08. Susan Lafountain and Lia LaPrise followed that up with goals at 8:50 and 8:15, respectively. The Pride then tied the game back up at 6:47. UConn and Hofstra went back and forth with goals scored by Grace Coon and Lafountain for the Huskies, and Taylor Mennella and Rachel Graff for the Pride to keep the game even at five apiece to end the quarter.
The Huskies opened the second quarter with an unanswered scoring run. LaPrise, Shaffer, and Kaitlyn Tartaglione all put one into the back of the net to make the score UConn 8 – Hofstra 5. Hofstra's Kelly and Kate Fiola slowed the Huskies down and put the Pride within one of the lead, once again. Lafountain scored another for UConn to notch herself a hat trick on the day with 3:32 left in the first half. Coon added a goal within the final minute of the half for the Huskies, and Hofstra's Kelly added another of her own to make the score UConn 10 – Hofstra 8.
UConn and Hofstra would open the second half by going scoring back and forth, started by a Hofstra goal that was quickly followed up by Madelyn George, scoring her first and only of the game. Mennella capitalized shortly after George's goal to keep Hofstra within one of the lead. At 9:40, Rayea Davis put a rocket into the back of the net on a free position shot. Hofstra's Kelly scored shortly after that, keeping UConn up by only one goal.
Scoreless since 8:04 left in the third quarter, it was a heavily defensive game until Hofstra's Kelly tied the game up with 10:26 left. The Pride followed that up with another goal to take the lead for the first time since 7:45 minutes into the game. Lafountain answered that goal to tie it back up for the Huskies. The clock ran down with big saves from goalkeeper Landyn White and takeaways from defensive senior, Ariana Kline, to force the game into overtime.
White came up with a save on a free position shot to start the first segment overtime. Neither team could capitalize on offensive opportunities, so the game went into the second segment. After a timeout called by the Huskies, Grace Coon found the back of the net for a huge goal to win the game.
Husky defense came up big today, with Amanda McMahon scooping up three ground balls and causing two turnovers, while Julia Ozimek had three ground balls of her own. Kline had seven draw controls and two caused turnovers, while Brown had six draws. Grad student goalkeeper, White had 16 saves on the day and three ground balls.
The Huskies stay on the road as they head to New York City to take on the Columbia Lions under the lights on Saturday, April 1 at 7:00pm.
