ORLANDO, Fla. - Coming out of a rain delay, the University of Connecticut women's tennis team fell short to Navy by a score of 5-2 Monday night at USTA National Campus.
With the final match on schedule in Orlando, the women finished 0-2 coming up just short against a strong Navy team. UConn stands at 7-4 overall and 1-1 in the Big East Conference.
Although the Navy Midshipmen put up strong performances to get the edge in singles play, the Huskies would make it a close battle. Cameron Didion would go 2-0 in Florida at fifth singles with another straight set win at 7-5, 6-3. Maria Constantinou would also add a singles point at second singles winning 6-2, 6-4.
Isabel Petri Bere would fight hard in a third set super tiebreak but would fall short at 1-6, 7-6 (7-5), 8-10. Navy would take the other three singles points at first singles, third singles, and sixth singles.
UConn would force a tiebreak in third doubles but came up short at 7-6 (7-5). Constantinou would make it 2-0 in doubles and singles as she won 6-4 with her first doubles partner, Olivia Wright. Navy would tack on the doubles point winning two of three at second doubles and third doubles to secure the win on the night.
"We came up against a tough Navy team today," Director of Tennis Glenn Marshall said. "We were literally a handful of points away from pulling off the victory. We had two tiebreakers that did not go our way, and that was the difference. Our team fought hard and competed very well in many positions. Maria really had a nice day with a win in doubles and singles. Cameron also had a strong singles win today. Overall, we are working on how to close out sets and matches, but we need more work in this area during competitions."
Next up the Huskies look ahead to a Big East matchup in Flushing Meadows, N.Y. against St. John's. First serve is scheduled for 12:15 p.m. ET on Mar. 24.
