Storrs, Conn. - The University of Connecticut Swimming and Diving Team fell to Villanova in a thriller Saturday 154-146. The Huskies and Wildcats exchanged leads several times with the meet victor determined by the final event, the 200y Freestyle Relay. The event itself came down to the wire, being won by a mere 1.56s.Â
Not to be deterred, the Huskies took many positives away from the day, particularly with improvements in technique. On her performance in the 200y Backstroke, Kayla Mendonca said, "It's a big event for me so sometimes I get nervous for it but i was just focusing on the process, my technique and just race strategy so I'm just happy to improve from my swim yesterday."
On the outcome and meet environment, Niamh Hofland said, "...We're a few girls down as well so coming that close and going into the last relay with so many vibes...it hasn't been that loud before...I think we all performed really well under the pressure."Â
On the two meets, Coach Chris Maiello said, "We had two great days of racing with Georgetown last night and Villanova today - two of the top teams in our conference. Great to go toe-to-toe with them. Proud of the girls, how they reacted, how they managed the day. It came down to the last relay which is always super exciting. We had a great environment...just really proud of the girls for how they raced and competed. To be continued..."
The meet concludes a two-meet home conference series with the Huskies taking a win against Georgetown Friday.Â
