GREENEVILLE, N.C. – Freshman Lia LaPrise netted four goals and an assist, sophomore Sydney Watson collected four points (3g, 1a) and senior captain Caitlin Leary added a hat trick of her own as UConn (3-14, 1-4) cruised to a 17-7 victory over ECU (5-12, 0-5) Saturday afternoon at Johnson Stadium.
The win snaps UConn's six-game losing streak, and gives the Huskies their first American Athletic Conference triumph of the season.
Abby Vetsch tallied two goals, while Anna Costello, Stephanie Palmucci, Dani Dunn and Jordan Coulon notched one goal apiece to wrap up the scoring for the Huskies.
After both teams got off to a slow start, UConn went on a six goal run to blow the game open, with four different Huskies contributing goals to key the separation during that span. LaPrise fired one into the back of the cage, and then found Palmucci on the next play to put the visitors ahead by two goals. LaPrise completed the hat trick with two more before Costello and Watson added strikes of their own to put UConn ahead, 7-1. Dunn, Vetsch and Coulon put up the last three scores of the first frame to give the Huskies a 10-3 halftime lead.
The road team continued its dominance in the second half, using goals from Watson (2), Leary (2), McKenna, LaPrise and Vetsch to open up a commanding 17-4 advantage.
UConn had no trouble closing out the game, and cruised to the ten point win.
