UConn with a milestone conference series victory over ECU

GREENVILLE, N.C.—The UConn softball team returned to the ECU Softball Field for game two of this American Athletic Conference weekend series. The Huskies (18-27, 6-11 AAC) were led to this 7-2 victory over the Pirates (21-28, 3-13 AAC) via a pair of doubles from Olivia Sappington and Carli Cutler, as well as tremendous pitching from Jill Stockley.
Both doubles came in the top of the third, Sappington's came first as she sent hers to left field. She rounded Briana Marcelino and Reese Guevarra. UConn took an early 2-0 lead but not for long as Cutler sent her double skipping down the right field line to score Sappington. The Huskies would exit the half inning with a 3-0 lead.
Guevarra was walked in the top of the sixth with the bases loaded and shifting Alexis Lemus across home plate, to increase the lead to 4-0. Marcelino followed with a single to left field which rounded Kelli Bates and Ashley Esty. These RBIs increased the lead to 6-0.
But, Bates and the UConn offense weren't done just yet. In the top of the seventh, she singled to third base and sent Cutler home to score. The Huskies' lead ballooned to seven, where it would stay for UConn.
In the bottom of seventh, ECU mounted an attempted rally on Stockley and her defense. The Pirates garnered a pair of runs on a hit by pitch and a single to third base. A fly out to left field would be the end for ECU, and the game.
Stockley pitched the entire game and delivered several strikeouts. UConn took yet another conference series for their six on the year. This milestone is one the team celebrated with such pride as this is this group's first time reaching six conference wins.
The series finale will take place Sunday, April 28th with first-pitch at noon.
