Huskies break out the brooms against the Pirates

GREENVILLE, N.C.—The UConn (19-27, 7-11 AAC) softball team enjoyed their first American Athletic Conference series sweep against ECU (21-29, 3-15 AAC), with the final game going to the Huskies 8-4.
Katie Koshes (6-7) received the start in the circle and tossed 6.1 innings to face 31 Pirate batters. She was relieved by Jill Stockley in the bottom of the seventh and took on four ECU batters. The duo threw 139 pitches with 74 record strikes.
Carli Cutler opened the scoring up for UConn in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly to left field, which allowed Briana Marcelino to cross home plate.
The Huskies tacked on more runs in the top of the fifth and concluded the half inning with six more to their cause. Kiwi McDaniel drove in the first run via a single to left center bringing Reese Guevarra home. Cutler made her return to the batter's box and sent her single to left field to score Olivia Sappington. Alexis Lemus smacked her single straight up the middle and propelled McDaniel home. ECU inserted a new pitcher in hope to slow the momentum, it didn't work.
Maura Glatczak was due up next for UConn and smashed a single to right field which was positioned so well that it brought in Lemus and Cutler. That would wrap up the scoring for the Huskies but not before six runs were scored on four hits with a pair left stranded.
UConn was not done. In the top of the seventh, Glatczak was the leadoff hitter and continued her hitting streak with a single to center field. A few batters later, Guevarra stepped into the batter's box and with a single to left field she sent pinch runner Carissa Brizzi to score. The Huskies' lead would plateau at eight.
The Pirates had the game tied at one point in the third inning, at one all. In the bottom of the seventh, they attempted a rally on Koshes and the UConn defense. A series of singles, a hit by pitch and a three RBI homer to left center gave the Pirates hope. The score at this point in the contest would be 8-4, Huskies. And as the story goes, Stockley entered the game for Koshes and helped the UConn defense to the finish line.
Up next is a single nonconference game versus Quinnipiac on Tuesday, April 30th at 3:00 p.m.
