CINCINNATI, Ohio. – Senior captain Caitlin Leary racked up six goals but the UConn women's lacrosse team's late rally fell short as the Huskies (2-9) fell, 11-9, to Cincinnati Saturday morning at Gettler Stadium in the inaugural AAC women's lacrosse game.
Sam McKenna, Abby Vetsch and Olivia Miles each tallied one goal apiece, with Lia LaPrise, Sydney Watson and Lexi Kenneally each dishing out one assist, respectively. Junior goalie Grace Beshlian collected 12 saves in the loss.
Watson and Leary connected for the first goal of the game as the sophomore found her senior captain, who slotted it home to put UConn ahead 1-0 at 28:01.
The Bearcats held a 9-1 lead after closing the first half with seven unanswered goals and then putting the first two of the second half on the board.
UConn cut the deficit to 9-4 following goals from Vetsch (20:01), Leary (18:13) and Miles (17:41) that helped jumpstart the rally. After Cincinnati built its lead back up to 11-5, the Huskies showed they weren't done just yet – making a late push with a 4-0 run to come within two.
The rally came up just a bit short though as the clock ran out and the Bearcats escaped with an 11-9 win.
