Huskies Stumped, 3-0, by No. 24 Wichita State

STORRS, Conn. - Redshirt sophomore Kayla Williams notched a team-high 13 kills, as the UConn Volleyball team fell to conference rival No. 24 Wichita State, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon. The Huskies (8-6) now own a 1-1 clip in American play, while the Shockers (10-3) improve to 2-0.
Junior Elizabeth Kline paced the squad with nine digs in the match, while Williams picked up eight of her own, falling just two shy of a double-double. Junior Emma Turner recorded a team-best 36 assists and posted the team's lone ace on the day.
The Shockers boasted a .323 hitting percentage, as Abbie Lehman tallied a match-high 17 kills in Wichita States victory. Defensively, libero Giorgia Civita strung together an impressive 19 digs, while the squad added eight total team blocks.
Set One (25-21)
Senior Tosin Adeniyi and Williams headlined the offensive with three kills apiece in a tight 25-21 set. Wichita State's Alex Koon served two aces in the set, helping her team to a strong offensive start. The Huskies were never able to grab the lead from their counterparts but fought hard throughout the contest, knotting the score five different times, including 17-17 after a 6-2 run.
Set Two (25-23)
Neither team let up throughout the set, as the two teams danced to a gridlock nine different times. A strong start after by a pair of kills from Williams and miscues cues by the Shockers, provided UConn with their biggest lead in the set, 7-3. Wichita State's .321 hitting percentage would help the team to a late 4-2 run, securing the 25-23 win. Leham led the Shockers with six kills, while Williams trailed closely with five of her own.
Set Three (25-20)
Wichita State's offensive thrived in the final set, as the Shockers turned in their best offensive performance with 16 kills and a .382 hitting percentage. The Huskies recorded 14 kills, but where denied four times at the hands of the Shockers defense, who tallied all four team blocks in the set. UConn never led in the final set, but the home team was able to knot the score early, 5-5, following a kill from Williams.
UConn returns to action with a pair of conference road games next weekend. The Huskies will first visit Houston (8 p.m.) on Friday, Sept. 29, before facing Tulane (1 p.m.) on Sunday, Oct. 1
