Huskies Sweep Wildcats in East Coast Challenge Opener

STORRS, Conn. - UConn volleyball opened the East Coast Challenge with a 3-0 sweep of New Hampshire Friday night at the UConn Volleyball Center, taking the Wildcats 25-19, 25-20, 25-15.
The Huskies improved to 4-4 on the season with the win, hitting .352 as a team while holding New Hampshire to a .156 hitting percentage. UConn also held an 11-2 advantage in blocks and recorded six service aces.
Courtney Grayson led the Huskies with nine kills while hitting .583, adding four blocks. Jordyn Hughes followed with eight kills on 14 attacks without committing an error for a .571 hitting percentage while adding six total blocks.
Sydney Borowy and Helena Einarsdottir each recorded eight kills, while Hazuna Akishige added 12 digs and three assists. Isabella Sohl finished with 29 assists, seven digs, two blocks assists and two kills.
Maggie Carley led UConn with three service aces while adding a dig and an assist.ย
After trailing 5-1 in set one, UConn scored six straight points to take a 7-5 lead, with kills from Einarsdottir, Grayson and Daca and back-to-back aces from Carley. The Huskies extended the lead to 17-14 with kills from Borowy, Daca and Einarsdottir, an ace from Sohl and a block from Hughes. Daca closed the set with a kill as UConn took the opener, 25-19.
In set two, UConn built a 17-11 lead behind kills from Einarsdottir, Sohl and Grayson and blocks involving Hughes, Borowy and Daca. New Hampshire cut the deficit to 24-20, but Sohl and Grayson combined for a block to close out the set, 25-20.
In the third set, UConn turned a 5-5 tie into a 9-5 lead with kills from Borowy, Hughes and Sohl and a New Hampshire attack error. After the Wildcats cut the deficit to 18-14, Akishige served five straight points, including an ace, a block from Sohl and Hughes and back-to-back kills from Borowy, giving UConn a 24-14 lead. Hughes closed the set with a kill from Sohl as the Huskies won, 25-15.
UConn continues East Coast Challenge action tomorrowย as it takes on FDU at 5 p.m. at the UConn Volleyball Center.
