Huskies Open AAC Play With 3-1 Win Against Memphis

STORRS, Conn. - The UConn volleyball team took down Memphis, 3-1, in its first conference match of the season in front of a full capacity crowd at Guyer Gym on Friday night. With the win, the Huskies improve to 8-5 overall and 1-0 in the AAC, while the Tigers fall to 7-6 overall and 0-1 in conference action.
Redshirt-sophomore Kayla Williams had a match-high 18 kills and seven aces pacing the squad offensively on the night. Junior Iman McGary tallied 12 digs defensively, while senior Tosin Adeniyi picked up a team best four blocks in the match.
Set One (25-17)
The first set proved to be a rubber match as the two teams traded points early in the set. Thanks to a strong offense performance by the Huskies and a few miscues by Memphis, UConn grabbed a nine point lead, 20-11. Williams led the way with five kills in the set, while Turner recorded nine assists and McGary picked up four digs. The Huskies ended the set with a match-high .458 hitting percentage on their way to a 25-17 victory.
Set Two (25-15)
The power of the offense made its way to set two aiding the Huskies to a 25-15 win. Williams continued to bring the intensity with four kills in the set. After a close match saw the score read 16-12, UConn went on a 9-2 run to close out the set.
Set Three (21-25)
The Huskies jumped out to a quick 3-0 advantage to begin the set, but Memphis soon closed the gap, knotting the score, 3-3. Although the Huskies fought hard, Memphis closed out the set with a 25-21 win. The Tigers defense proved to be too much despite four kills from Williams and three apiece from Adeniyi and McGary.
Set Four (25-19)
UConn took the first point of the set thanks to a kill by Turner. After two consecutive kills by Barrett, Memphis came back with a 3-0 run causing UConn to call a timeout. For the remainder of the set, the teams danced to a gridlock, eight different times. The Huskies stayed resilient and strung together a come back to win the set 25-19, thanks to three straight kills by Williams
The Huskies return to action on Sunday September 24th when they welcome No. 24 Wichita State.
