UConn Drops Four-Set Battle to Yale

STORRS, Conn. - UConn volleyball fell to Yale, 3-1, Sunday afternoon at the UConn Volleyball Center to close out the East Coast Challenge.
The Huskies moved to 5-5 on the season, finishing the match with 43 kills, nine total blocks and five service aces.
Sydney Borowy led the Huskies offensively with 11 kills, while Courtney Grayson added nine and Grace Maria finished with eight. Isabella Sohl recorded 26 assists, while Hazuna Akishige led UConn with 16 digs. Helena Einarsdottir followed with 14 digs.
Yale jumped out to an early lead in the opening set, taking an 8-2 advantage and forcing a UConn timeout. The Huskies battled back behind kills from Grayson, Maja Daca and Borowy, but the Bulldogs continued to maintain control and extended their lead to 20-10. UConn scored five of the final eight points, but Yale closed out the set, 25-15.
UConn responded in the second set, taking an 8-6 lead after a pair of Maria service aces and consecutive Yale attack errors. The Huskies continued to build their advantage, using kills from Grayson, Sohl, Borowy and Maria to take a 15-11 lead. Yale trimmed the deficit to one at 17-16, but UConn answered with a 5-1 run to pull ahead 22-17. The Huskies held on to take the set, 25-21, and even the match at 1-1.
The third set featured 10 ties as both teams traded runs throughout. UConn held an 18-17 lead late in the set following back-to-back kills from Borowy and Grayson, but Yale responded with three straight points to take a 20-18 advantage. Borowy added a kill to cut the deficit to one, and UConn later pulled within 23-22, but Yale scored the final two points to take the set, 25-22.
The Huskies and Bulldogs battled through another tight fourth set. After a Yale service error, Borowy served an ace and the Huskies picked up points on four Yale attack errors, including two blocks by Hughes, to tie the set at 18-18. Yale went back up 20-18, but two Maria kills and a Yale attack error put the Huskies ahead 21-20 before the teams traded points to 23-23. Yale scored the final two points, however, to secure the 25-23 set victory and the 3-1 match win.
UP NEXT: The Huskies continue their home stretch with the "For the White and Blue" Tournament, Sept. 18-20, at the UConn Volleyball Center. UConn will face Coppin State, Merrimack and Rhode Island.
