STORRS, Conn. - Redshirt-sophomore Kayla Williams recorded her team-best ninth double-double of the season as the UConn volleyball team faltered against Cincinnati, 3-1, on Friday night. With the loss, the Huskies (9-8) fall to 2-3 in American action, while the Bearcats (6-11) improve to 4-1.
Williams notched a season-high 21 kills in the defeat and racked up 10 digs to record her second double-double in three matches. Freshman Ally Barrett had her best offensive showing of the season thus far, as the outside hitter tallied a season-best 16 kills. Junior libero Kennedy Arundel paced the squad with 16 digs on the night, while senior Tosin Adeniyi and redshirt-freshman Genna Florig picked up two blocks apiece.
Despite UConn winning the first set, 26-24, Cincinnati would bounce back to sweep the following three sets and complete the comeback.
Set One (26-24)
The Huskies held a slight edge throughout the beginning of the first set. After a pair of attacking errors by Cincinnati gave the Huskies a 15-13 lead, the Bearcats where forced to call a timeout. Following the timeout, the visitors outscored UConn 5-2 to gain their biggest lead of the set, 20-17. The Huskies would later fight back to knot the score at 24-24, before a pair of attacking errors by the Bearcats would lift UConn to a final 26-24 victory. Williams and Barrett tacked on five kills apiece to lead the offensive.
Set Two (23-25)
The rubber matched continued as the two teams exchanged the lead seven different times. Although Williams recorded a set-high eight kills, it wasn't enough to top the Bearcats' .212 hitting percentage. Defensively, Cincinnati posted three total team blocks in the win.
Set Three (13-25)
The third set swayed in favor of the Bearcats who limited the Huskies offense to a -.107 hitting percentage. Led by Carly Nolan's four kills and the teams eight blocks, Cincinnati held their opponents to 13 points, while posting their largest margin of victory on the night, 25-13.
Set Four (25-23)
Williams and Barrett gave their team a fight chance as the duo recorded seven and four kills, respectively, in the final set. Junior Emma Turner racked up a set-best five digs, helping the Huskies to battle to a 23-23 gridlock late in the match. Cincinnati would gain their final points following a UConn attacking error before Nolan recorded her 18th kill of the match for a final 25-23 score.
The Huskies continue their home slate with a Sunday matinee against conference foe ECU at Guyer Gym. The match is slated to begin at 12:00 p.m.
