STORRS, Conn. - Two members of the No. 1 UConn field hockey team pegged major BIG EAST field hockey weekly honors, as announced by the league on Monday. Seniors Charlotte Veitner and Nina Klein were tabbed Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, following a 1-0 week for the Huskies
In what was another record-setting afternoon for the Huskies' all-time leading scorer, Veitner tied a BIG EAST match record in both goals (5) and points (10) in a 10-0 victory over Georgetown on Saturday. Her five score performance not only matched UConn's Rose Aspelin's against Rutgers (10/19/96) but also moved the senior past Aspelin and into first place for points scored in a BIG EAST regular season (28). All season long, Veitner has been at the forefront of UConn's prolific offense which holds the record for most points (113), goals (37) and assists (39) in BIG EAST regular season play, surpassing 2008 Syracuse's mark of 35 goals and 103 points, 2015 Connecticut's 35 goals and 2011 Connecticut's 36 assists. In addition, the forward currently sits atop the nation in points (61) and goals (25) scored.
Notching a program record with her 34th career shutout to lead No. 1 UConn to a 10-0 victory against BIG EAST foe Georgetown on Saturday afternoon, Klein recorded four saves on her way to history. The redshirt-senior now holds the program's all-time record in wins (78) and shutouts. With only nine total goals allowed on the season, one in BIG EAST play, Klein leads the nation in goals against average (0.59) while the Huskies have outscored their opponents, 79-9, for anNCAA- leading 4.61 margin of victory. The shutout marked Klein's eighth of the season and a BIG EAST record fifth in conference matches, surpassing UConn's Sarah Mansfield (2011) and Melissa Bostwick (2004) four shutouts apiece.
