Wednesday's Match-Up
The UConn women's lacrosse team (7-4, 2-0 Big East) resumes conference play on Wednesday (3 p.m.) with a home match against Temple (8-3, 0-2 Big East) at the George J. Sherman-Family Sports Complex.
Connecticut, which improved to 4-0 at home this season with a win over the weekend, sports a 1-2 all-time record against the Owls. The Huskies downed Temple, 15-9, last season in what was the first meeting between the two since 2006. The Owls enter Wednesday's match-up with wins in six of their seven road games on the year.
Last Time Out
UConn defeated Marquette, 13-8, on Saturday in Storrs behind a career-high six points from freshman Grace Nolan (Marcellus, N.Y.). The Connecticut attacker also finished with a career-best three assists, while senior midfielder Emily Anderson (Killingworth, Conn.) and junior attacker Katherine Finkelston (Leonardtown, Md.) each recorded a hat trick.
Sophomore attacker Jacqueline Jordan (Los Gatos, Calif.) led the charge on the draw, controlling a career-high six draw controls to go along with two ground balls and a caused turnover. The Huskies finished the match with a 14-9 advantage on the draw, and junior goalkeeper Shannon Nee (Lancaster, Pa.) tallied eight saves on the way to her seventh victory of the season. The result gave UConn its sixth win in its last seven games.
Scouting The Owls
Temple dropped its first two Big East games this season after starting the year 8-1. The Owls boast one victory over a ranked opponent (No. 19 Delaware) in 2015, and their only road loss of the season came on Saturday to Vanderbilt in a 14-8 win for the Commodores. Temple is led by junior midfielder Nicole Tiernan, who ranks first on the team in points (28) and goals (28), while attackers Nicole Barretta and Kathryn Skahan are both second in goals (11) and assists (2).
The Owls' 12.73 draw controls a match are good for the third-best mark among Big East schools, and they rank fifth in the league in scoring offense (9.91). Tiernan has also paced Temple on the defensive end, averaging a team-best 1.55 caused turnovers a game to go along with 16 ground balls on the year.
Goalkeeper Jaqi Kakalecik has played nearly every minute in the cage this season for the Owls, who have conceded 10.45 goals per game this season. The redshirt junior ranks in the top three in the Big East in saves (74) and saves per match (6.73), and her 2.91 ground balls per game are the second-highest total among conference players in 2015.
