STORRS, Conn. - Robin Kleine and Ali Blankmeyer each found the back of the net to lead the University of Connecticut field hockey team to a 2-0 victory over Michigan on Sunday afternoon at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex in Storrs, Conn. With the win, the Huskies improve to a spotless 3-0-0 on the season while the Wolverines slip to 0-4-0.
Connecticut has now outscored the opposition by a 7-to-1 count this season and freshman goalkeeper Sarah Mansfield's goals against average is now at a stingy 0.33.
UConn got on the board first when Kleine netted her first goal of the season at the 17:44 mark. The Huskies earned a penalty corner, which was taken at the top of the circle by Jestine Angelini. Angelini drilled the ball into the circle and it was redirected by Allison Angulo. The ball found its way to the stick of Kleine and she tipped the ball past a diving Christi Barwick to give UConn a lead it would not relinquish.
The Huskies added some insurance when Blankmeyer scored her fist goal of 2010 at the 48:35 mark. Melissa Gonzalez dribbled through the Michigan defense and dished to Anne Jeute, who struck a hard cross through the circle and found Blankmeyer who tipped it into an open goal.
Connecticut ended the contest with a 10-to-9 edge in shots and held a 7-to-5 advantage in shots on goal.
Mansfield stopped all five shots that she faced and earned her second shutout in her third career game. Michigan's Barwick made four saves on the afternoon.
The Huskies had a great chance to go up 2-0 with 8:45 remaining in the first half but Michigan's Meredith Way came up with a big defensive save to keep the deficit at one goal. The Huskies were awarded a penalty corner and Jestine Angelini took the shot from the top of the circle, which was deflected towards the net by Kleine. Kleine tried to redirect the ball into the net but Way made a stop at the goal line and hit the ball out of harm's way.
UConn held an 8-to-3 edge in shots during the first half, including a 6-to-1 advantage in shots on goal.
Connecticut is back in action on Saturday, September 11 when the team travels to Amherst to take on UMass. Game time is set for 1 p.m. and fans can follow along live via gametracker on UConnHuskies.com.
