Huskies Fall To Duquesne In Four, 3-1

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Despite three players with double digit kills, the University of Connecticut volleyball team finished the Active Ankle Challenge with a 3-1 loss to Duquesne this afternoon, falling to 2-4 on the year. The match marked the first time the Huskies have gone longer than three sets in a contest this season.
Set scores were 20-25, 25-18, 25-20, 25-21.
The Huskies jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first set, with kills from Jordan Kirk (Plano, Texas) and Morgan Freeman (Virginia Beach, Va.) and a Rebecca Murray (Carmel, Ind.) service ace and never looked back as they held at least a two-point lead for the rest of the set. UConn finished strong, knocking off three straight points to end the set off of a kill and a pair of blocks from Freeman and Murray.
UConn's largest lead during the set was five points, which they held four times at 9-4, 13-8, 20-15 and 25-20.
The Huskies held the lead just six times throughout the next three sets, including a 4-1 advantage at the start of the fourth set, due to kills from Murray and Kirk, before the Dukes bounced back with four straight points to regain control of the match.
As a team, UConn tallied a season-high 49 kills and out-blocked Duquesne 21-14, including a match-high six block assists from Freeman.
Kelsey Maving (Tonawanda, N.Y.) recorded a match and season-high 26 digs during the contest, ending the weekend with 59 digs (5.90 digs per set), five assists and a pair of service aces to earn a spot on the Active Ankle Challenge All-Tournament Team.
Kirk posted the first double-double of the season, tallying 10 kills and 20 assists against the Dukes, with three kills coming in both the first and third sets.
Murray and Mattison Quayle (Los Angeles, Calif.) also recorded double digit kills, setting season-highs with 11 and 10 respectively. Murray also added seven digs and five block assists while Quayle notched a match-high four service aces with two block assists.
The Huskies take a break from tournament play and travel to Boston, Mass. to face Northeastern on Tuesday, September 14 in a 7:00 p.m. contest.
