STORRS, Conn. - The Huskies scored four goals in the first 9:14 and never looked back as the No. 5 University of Connecticut field hockey team trounced Georgetown, 9-1, on Saturday afternoon at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex in Storrs, Conn. With the win, UConn improves to 10-2 overall and 3-1 in BIG EAST play. The Hoyas slip to 6-7, 1-2.
Jestine Angelini put together a near record-setting day, dishing-out four assists and netting a goal. Angelini was one assist shy of tying UConn's single-game record for assists and only four points shy of tying that single-game mark. To top that, she did all her damage in the first 24:21.
The Huskies have outscored the opposition by a 16-2 margin in two games this week.
The Husky offense came mainly via the penalty corner, as the team out-cornered GU by an 11-2 count.
Ali Blankmeyer got the scoring started after Jestine Angelini struck a shot off a corner from the top of the circle. Blankmeyer got her stick on it and redirected it past a stunned Briana Pereira and into the back of the net, just 3:04 into the contest.
It was deja vu all over again just 3:38 later after Angelini again fired a shot deep into the circle but this time Allison Angulo tipped it past Pereira for the eventual game-winner.
Cara Silverman added some insurance when she netted her team-high ninth goal of the campaign. Anne Jeute dribbled deep into the circle and poked a shot, which was saved but the rebound deflected to Silverman. Silverman corralled the shot and drilled it into the back of the net.
Blankmeyer scored her second goal, and eighth of the season, in the same way she scored her first goal, which was Angelini's third assist of the game.
Georgetown would net a goal at 23:33 to make things mildly interesting but Marie Elena Bolles quashed any hopes of a Hoya comeback when she added the answer just over a minute later.
The Huskies would add three more goals in the second half to complete the 1-0 rout.
UConn out-shot the Hoyas by a 31-6 margin and held a 19-4 advantage in shots on goal.
The Huskies are back in action on Sunday, October 10 when the team travels to Chestnut Hill, Mass. to take on top-ranked North Carolina. Game time is set for 12 p.m.
