Syracuse, N.Y. - Rebecca Murray (Carmel, Ind.) posted double-digit kills for the second straight match to reach 1,000 kills on her career, as the University of Connecticut volleyball team fell to Syracuse, 3-1 in BIG EAST action this evening.
Set scores were 19-25, 25-21, 25-14, 25-21.
With 13 kills on the night, Murray is just three kills shy of tying Heather Sokol (1993-96) who ranks 10th in UConn career kills.
The Huskies got off to a strong start, taking set one 25-19 with six kills from Murray and five from Morgan Freeman (Virginia Beach, Va.). UConn opened the set on a four-point run with kills from Allison Nickel (Pittsford, N.Y.), who ended the match with six kills, and a Murray service ace and never looked back as they held the lead for the remainder of the set.
Four Syracuse errors led to a five-point Husky run at the end of the set, capped off by a Mattison Quayle (Los Angeles, Calif.) service ace, giving UConn the 24-18 advantage. Freeman, who ended the night with seven kills, posted her fifth kill of the match from Angela Roidt (McFarland, Wis.) to end the set and give the Huskies the 25-19 victory.
From there the Orange would take over the match, winning the next three sets led by Hayley Todd and Noemie Lefebvre who combined for 23 kills on the night.
Jordan Kirk (Plano, Texas) also tallied double-digit kills for the second straight match, posting 13 against Syracuse, just one shy of her season-high.
The Huskies had six service aces on the night, three from Murray, two from Kelsey Maving (Tonawanda, N.Y.) and one from Quayle.
Roidt had 39 assists on the night, while Freeman and Maving combined for 21 UConn digs.
The Huskies continue BIG EAST action on Sunday (Oct. 10) when they travel to Marquette for a 3:00 p.m. EST match.
