RENO, Nev. - The University of Connecticut volleyball team ended its time at the Nevada Courtyard Marriott/Fairfield Invitational with a 3-0 loss to No. 6 California on Sunday afternoon. The Huskies return to Storrs with a 0-4 record while the Golden Bears move to 2-1 with the win.
Freshman Kelsey Maving (Tonawanda, N.Y.) continued to lead UConn in the dig column with another match-best total of 12 against California. She also had a pair of service aces in the weekend finale for the Huskies.
On the offensive side of things, UConn was once again led by junior Rebecca Murray (Carmel, Ind.) and sophomore Jordan Kirk (Plano, Texas) who finished with 10 and nine kills, respectively. Murray recorded six of the Huskies' 13 kills in the opening 25-19 loss while Kirk's best part of the afternoon came in the second set with four kills. UConn lost that set by the slimmest of margins against the Golden Bears, losing 25-23.
Sophomores Samantha Arriaran (Norco, Calif.) and Allison Nickel (Pittsford, N.Y.) accounted for six block assists in the 25-21 loss in the third set. The Huskies had 10 block assists in the three-set finale.
Murray's stellar play earned her a spot on the Nevada Courtyard Marriott/Fairfield Invitational All-Tournament Team.
Volleyball is back in action at Harry A. Gampel Pavilion with its own UConn Toyota Classic on Friday and Saturday. The first game between New Hampshire and Texas Christian is scheduled for 5 p.m. The Huskies take home court for the first time in 2009 with a 7:30 p.m. match against defending Northeast Conference Champion Long Island.
