STORRS, Conn. - The University of Connecticut lacrosse team returns to the road after wrapping up its five-game homestand with a pair of BIG EAST victories last weekend. This is the first time this season that the Huskies will face conference opponents away from the comforts of George J. Sherman-Family Sports Complex. On Friday at 4 p.m., UConn takes on Loyola (Md.) as that team looks to snap its two-game skid.
On the other hand, the Huskies (2-9, 2-1) will strive to continue their winning trend after posting a pair of games into the win column last weekend. M.E. Lapham (Cazenovia, N.Y.) was credited with the gamewinner in Friday's 11-9 victory over Cincinnati. Lapham has scored three or more goals in each of the last three games and is third on the team with a total of 28 points.
It was Whitney Michele (East Rochester, N.Y.) with the all important gamewinning mark against Louisville on Sunday. Just 18 seconds were left on the clock when Michele gave the Huskies the 8-7 win and netted her team-best 27 goal of the season. She is second on the team with a total of 35 points this season.
Leading the pack is Kiersten Tupper (Camillus, N.Y.) who has totaled 40 points thus far her freshman season. She has scored 18 goals and passed off a team-high 22 assists.
The first stop for the Huskies is Loyola (Md.) where the Greyhounds (7-3, 0-2) look to rebound from a rocky start to the conference season. Loyola (Md.) lost its opening BIG EAST games at Rutgers and at Notre Dame. Despite the loss, the Greyhounds remained in the national rankings and will look to Emily Gibson to turn things around. Gibson has posted career-highs in goals, assists, points, ground balls and caused turnovers.
Sunday features another match up against a nationally ranked opponent in Georgetown at 1 p.m. The Hoyas (7-3, 2-0) have won their last two BIG EAST games and are currently second in the conference standings. Two Hoyas were named to the BIG EAST honor roll after helping Georgetown to a 14-12 victory over Notre Dame last weekend. Jacqueline Giles scored five times in the 2-0 weekend while Jordan Trautman helped control things on the other end of the field with four ground balls and three caused turnovers.
