UConn Women's Lacrosse Schedule
STORRS, Conn. - University of Connecticut lacrosse head coach Angela McMahon announced the 2010 schedule on Monday. The Huskies open the year with a four-game homestand before hitting the road for the first of seven games away. The 2010 schedule features a pair of first-time opponents as well as teams the Huskies have not faced in recent past.
In her second year on the sidelines, McMahon will guide her team through a challenging non-conference schedule in preparation for the BIG EAST schedule that will feature a new opponent as Villanova joins the conference this season.
"UConn Lacrosse is very excited for the 2010 season," McMahon said. "Our team is looking forward to battling with our in-state rivals, as well as our other tough out-of-conference opponents. I am happy to welcome Villanova into the conference this year, and expect another very competitive season between the BIG EAST programs."
Last season, the BIG EAST boasted a trio of programs that headed to the NCAA Tournament and the Huskies will fight to improve on a 2-5 conference record. The Huskies season opens at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex on Feb. 20 with a 1 p.m. game against UMass.
McMahon spent two seasons as an assistant with the Minutewomen while assistant coach Melynda Zwick was a four-year letterwinner in Amherst. This is the first time the Huskies will take on UMass in women's lacrosse since the 1998 season.
Following the season opener, UConn hosts a trio of non-conference foe in its longest homestand of the season. For the first time in women's lacrosse, the Huskies will face Iona on Feb. 24 before hosting Canisius and Quinnipiac in Storrs. UConn's Feb. 28 game against Canisius is the first since a victory in the 2008 season while the Bobcats are an intrastate rival of the Huskies and a frequently among UConn's non-conference competitors.
The first round game is another first-time opponent for UConn when the team takes on Binghamton at noon on March 7. For the second-consecutive season the Huskies will face Marist, this time in the comforts of home at 3 p.m. on March 10.
UConn looks to remain undefeated against Sacred Heart in the all-time series when the Huskies travel to nearby Fairfield, Conn. to face the Pioneers on March 13. The March 19 contest against St. Bonaventure is the final home game before the Huskies go on a season long three-game roadtrip.
UConn concludes the non-conference portion of its schedule with an evening matchup at Holy Cross on March 24. Following that clash against the Crusaders, it is all BIG EAST for the Huskies who will face Rutgers (April 3) and Georgetown (April 5) on the road.
BIG EAST lacrosse comes to Storrs on April 9 as UConn hosts the Orange for the second-consecutive season before welcoming Villanova in its first complete season as a member of the conference. Loyola (Md.) rounds out the three-game stint at Sherman on April 18 at 1 p.m.
The Huskies travel to Louisville and Cincinnati, both teams UConn recorded its conference victories over in 2009, on April 23 and 25, respectively. UConn's regular season concludes with a noon matchup against Notre Dame at Sherman on May 1.
