Syracuse Volleyball Blocks UConn from Weekend Sweep on Sunday

STORRS, Conn. - The University of Connecticut volleyball team was unable to surpass Syracuse on Sunday, losing a 3-1 decision in BIG EAST action at Harry A. Gampel Pavilion. The Huskies are now 4-2 in conference play and fall to 11-10 overall. Sophomore Samantha Arriaran (Norco, Calif.) recorded her fifth double-double this season with 42 assists and 10 digs.
Prior to the start of the match, senior Jessica Isaac (Erlanger, Ky.) received a game ball in acknowledgement of becoming the UConn career digs leader earlier this season. After today's match, Isaac now has 1,876 digs.
Junior Rebecca Murray (Carmel, Ind.) led the team in kills for the 10th time this season, registering 15 kills while senior Chauntay Mickens (Germantown, Md.) and sophomore Jordan Kirk (Plano, Texas) each contributed 12 kills.
UConn was held to a .151 team-hitting percentage while the Orange recorded 16 total team blocks led by Sarah Morton who sent 11 back. Morton recorded a match-best 17 kills and was responsible for two of Syracuses' six service aces.
Isaac led a trio of UConn players with double-figures in digs, totaling 22 on the day. Freshman Kelsey Maving (Tonawanda, N.Y.) finished the afternoon with 13 while Arriaran added 10.
After obtaining an early first-set lead, the Huskies were overcome by a Syracuse rally to trail 9-6.UConn tied the match at 14-14 with a kill from freshman Mattison Quayle (Los Angeles, Calif.). The Orange regained the advantage and held the Huskies at bay en route to the 25-22 win.
Quayle finished the match with nine kills in addition to six assists and six digs.
The score was tied nine times in the second set before UConn was able to put Syracuse away with a four-point rally, capturing the 25-23 victory. Syracuse regained the match advantage with a third-set 25-21 win. UConn trailed by six (16-10) before the Huskies railed back to cut the deficit to four (20-16). The Huskies came within three points (23-20) before the Orange ended it with a pair of kills to win the third set, 25-21.
In the fourth set, Syracuse (16-5, 5-1) maintained consistent control of the scoreboard en route to the 25-15 set victory, capturing its fifth BIG EAST match win this season.
UConn breaks from conference action with a midweek tilt at Fairfield on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
Game Notes
- This is the second BIG EAST match that Samantha Arriaran has finished with a double-double in assists and digs. Arriaran had her first in the Huskies' comeback five-set victory at USF on Oct. 2.
- Mattison Quayle posted a career-high in assists with six against the Orange.
- Rebecca Murray has recorded double-digit kill efforts in each of the last four matches and has done so in five of seven BIG EAST matches this season.
