STORRS, Conn. (April 18, 2008) - Katy Ryan (Hamburg, N.Y.) scored a game-high five goals, but the University of Connecticut women's lacrosse team was edged by California, 16-13, Friday night at the George J. Sherman Family-Sports Complex. The Huskies are now 1-14 on the season, while the Golden Bears improve to 9-4 overall.
All five of Ryan's goals came in the first half as UConn led 10-9 at the intermission. Robyn Pastuch (Merrick, N.Y.) also helped pace the Huskies, tallying a career-high tying three goals for the third time this season, while Whitney Michele (East Rochester, N.Y.) and Kim McGinty (Huntington, N.Y.) also had multi-goal games with two apiece.
The Huskies had several scoring opportunities off the opening draw, but it was Cal who found the back of the net first just over two minutes into the game. The Golden Bears stretched the lead to four by 22:43, but UConn scored four of the next five goals to inch back into the game, trailing 5-4, at the 14:03 mark.
Cal managed to stay one step ahead through much of the period until Ryan went on a three-goal scoring spree to close out the first half and earn the Huskies their first lead of the game with 0:08 to play in the period. They headed into the intermission with the advantage for the third time this season.
Michele continued the 4-0 run out of the break by scoring an unassisted goal at 27:28 in the second half to stretch the lead to 11-9, UConn's largest of the night. The Bears answered with five straight goals, including two each from Ghillie Little and Alyse Kennedy, to pull back ahead, 14-11, with 12:43 to play.
Following another goal by Michele, Pastuch scored an unassisted goal at 8:52 to pull UConn back within one, but Cal scored two quick goals that eventually accounted for the 16-13 score. Neither team scored in the final 5:09, as both defenses buckled down. Goalie Jenna Moulton (East Rochester, N.Y.) came up with a key save during that stretch, bringing her game total to 14 - the third highest total of the season.
Kennedy led the Bears with four goals on the night. They held a 22-9 draw control advantage and a narrow 12-10 edge in ground balls.
The Huskies close out the 2008 season Sunday, Apr. 20 against Georgetown at 1:00 p.m. at the Sherman Complex. The game will be televised by Cox Sports Television and aired on tape delay by Cox and MASN. More information on the television schedule can be found .
