STORRS, Conn. (November 2, 2006) - Megan Cersosimo, a 2001 UConn graduate who has been a member of the women’s lacrosse coaching staff for the past five years, has been named the head coach of the University of Connecticut women’s lacrosse team on a permanent basis.
Cersosimo had served as interim head coach since August when Bonnie Rosen, who had been the Husky head coach since the program’s inception in 1997, accepted the head coaching position at Temple.
“Megan has done an outstanding job in her time as interim head coach of our women’s lacrosse program,” says UConn Director of Athletics Jeff Hathaway. “In this time, she has further demonstrated that is the right person to lead our women’s lacrosse program to the level that we would like to see it reach. Megan has a great knowledge of the University and has great enthusiasm for the game.”
Cersosimo, the former Megan Campbell, was a four-year letterwinner for the Huskies and was part of the program’s first recruiting class. She was named All-BIG EAST second team as a senior and to the North Regional All-American Second Team.
“I would like to thank President Philip Austin, Director of Athletics Jeff Hathaway and Associate Director of Athletics/Senior Women's Administrator Pat Babcock, for this amazing opportunity,” Cersosimo said. “I could not be more honored or excited that I am beginning my head-coaching career at my alma mater. I look forward to instilling, in our lacrosse program, a sense of tradition and excellence consistent with that of the University of Connecticut’s athletic programs.”
She was a captain in her junior and seniors years and left as the school career record holder in games started, ground balls and draw controls.
Cersosimo graduated from UConn with a degree in communications. She is married to UConn assistant football coach Matt Cersosimo.
