Huskies Defeat #17 Rutgers 4-3

PISCATAWAY, N.J. โ UConn women's field hockey defeated Rutgers 4-3 on Sunday afternoon following a 3-1 shootout win. UConn finished with advantages of 15-13 in shots and 12-8 in shots on goal, while its goalkeeper made five saves.
The Huskies finished with 15 shots and 12 shots on goal, compared with 13 shots and eight shots on goal for Rutgers. Rutgers recorded nine saves against UConn's attack, while Natalie Mckenna made five saves for the Huskies in a game with sustained work for both goalkeepers.
UConn fell behind in the first quarter when Rutgers' Laura Loycke scored at 6:34 for a 1-0 score. Natalie Mckenna made two saves, and the Huskies generated two Milou Heuker penalty corners along with shots from Fien Hollander and Abby Davidson before the quarter ended with Rutgers ahead 1-0.
Charlotte Ritter tied the game for UConn at 1-1 with a goal at 19:32 in the second quarter. The Huskies generated four penalty corners and forced seven saves from Emily Nicholls in the quarter, finishing the segment level at 1-1.
UConn answered Rutgers' early third-quarter goal when Lucy Zich scored at 34:41 off assists from Olivia McKenna and Ritter, tying the game at 2-2. Natalie Mckenna made two saves in the quarter as Rutgers generated multiple penalty-corner chances, and the Huskies entered the fourth still level at 2-2.
Emma Larit scored off an assist from Lene Reiche at 52:53 to put UConn ahead 3-2 in the fourth quarter. The Huskies had built pressure with four penalty corners in the quarter, including two in the sequence before Larit's goal. Rutgers answered on Anna Cogdell's goal at 56:23, and regulation ended tied 3-3.
UConn kept Rutgers off the board in a scoreless first overtime despite Hollander's green card at 70:04. Rutgers' only listed shot of the overtime period went wide, and ย ended with the game tied 3-3.ย
With no winner determined in the overtime period, both teams went into a penalty shootout, where the Huskies closed the shootout by converting three of its final four attempts, with Reiche, Ritter and Zich all scoring. Rutgers made one of its four attempts listed against Natalie Mckenna, and Zich's conversion finished the segment.
