Huskies Sweep Georgetown, Secure Share of BIG EAST Regular Season Title

WASHINGTON, D.C. โย The UConn softball team dominated the Georgetown Hoyas, 15-1 in a five-inning run-rule victory on Sunday afternoon at the Mount Vernon Athletic Complex. With the win the Huskies secured a share of the BIG EAST Regular Season Championship with Providence, closing out the regular season with a 18-6 record in BIG EAST play and 28-25 overall record on the year.ย ย ย
Graduate Jessica Walter made her 15thย start of the season in the regular season finale for the Huskies.ย Walterย tossed 3.0 scoreless innings in the circle, giving up a pair of hits with a strikeout.
UConn took control early, scoring a pair of runs in the top of the 1stย inning, giving the Huskies a 2-0 lead. Cat Petteys opened the scoring with her team-leading 14thย double this season, bringing home Kaitlyn Kibling from third base. The next batter, Haley Coupal scoredย Petteysย with a single, doubling the Huskies lead.ย
UConn extended its lead to 7-0 in the top of the 2ndย inning on three hits. Heidi Barber got it started with a single, scoring Ava Calciano and Emma Willers. Later in the inning,ย Petteysย hit another double, scoring Caylee De Meo andย Barber. Coupalย capped off the big inning with her second hit of the game, bringing homeย Petteysย from second base.ย ย
UConn continued their offensive dominance in the top of the 3rdย inning, hanging an eight spot on the board to balloon the lead to 15-0. The Huskies loaded the bases forย Barberย who delivered a single, scoringย Calciano. Kiblingย followedย Barberย with a ground out to third base, scoringย Willers.ย The next batter, Savannah Ring brought in two more runs with a double, scoringย De Meoย andย Barber,ย putting UConn into double digits with an 11-0 advantage. Two batters later,ย Coupalย kept the hit parade going with her third hit of the game, scoringย Ringย from second base. Later in the inning, the Huskies once again loaded the bases forย Willersย who cleared them with a triple, the first three-bagger of her career, capping off UConn's big inning at the plate.ย
Sophomore Alexandra Bacher came on in relief forย Walterย in the 4thย inning, making her 16thย appearance of the season.Bacherย went 1.0 inning giving up one run on three hits.ย
Georgetown scored their lone run of the game in the bottom of the 4thย inning, making it a 15-1 game.ย
Sophomore Amber Bretton came on in relief forย Bacherย in the 5thย inning, making her 20thย appearance this season.ย Brettonย got the first two outs of the inning before handing the ball to classmate Stella Kiemele in the circle, making her ninth appearance of the season.ย Kiemeleย got the final out of the inning, securing the series sweep of Georgetown.ย ย
