STORRS, Conn. - The UConn baseball team (31-23, 14-5 BIG EAST) earned another one-run victory with a 6-5 win in its series opener against Villanova (18-29, 4-15 BIG EAST) on Thursday night at Elliot Ballpark.
The Huskies jumped in front by scoring in their third-straight first inning, the longest stretch of the season, after back-to-back hits from Anthony Belisario and Cam Righi to place runners at the corners. Jackson Marshall delivered a sacrifice fly to give UConn a 1-0 lead.
The same trio contributed to the Huskies run in the third with back-to-back hits from Belisario and Righi. After a wild pitch placed runners at second and third, Marshall registered an RBI ground out to short to make it 2-0.Â
It was deja vu in the fifth inning with Belisario and Righi recording their third hits of the night to set up Marshall to drive in Belisario with an RBI single that beat the shift on the right side of the infield. The base hit extended Marshall's reach base streak to 43-straight contests. Moments later, Maddix Dalena brought home a run to make it 4-0 with an RBI ground out.Â
Charlie West earned the win on Thursday with his eighth quality start of the season with 6.0 shutout innings of work and struck out seven.Â
After Villanova scored three runs in the top of the eighth, Dalena answered with a two-run homer, his sixth of the season, to push the lead back to 6-3.Â
After a Collin Quintano two-run homer in the ninth made it a one-run game, 6-5, Greg Shaw III came out of the bullpen and got back-to-back strikeouts to close out the win.Â
With the victory the Huskies sit alone in the BIG EAST standings with a one-game lead over St. John's, Xavier and Creighton with two games to play.
The series resumes on Friday, May 15 at 6:05 p.m.Â
