WASHINGTON, D.C. โย The UConn softball team came back from a 6-1 deficit to take the series opener at Georgetown, 14-6 on Friday afternoon from the Mount Vernon Athletic Complex. The Huskies improve to 16-6 in BIG EAST play and 26-25 overall this season.ย
Freshman Caprice Bohmer made her 22ndย start of the season in the series opener for the Huskies.ย Bohmerย went 4.0 innings in the circle, giving up two earned runs on six hits, adding a strikeout.ย
Georgetown jumped out to an early lead, scoring two runs in the 1stย inning and one run in the 2ndย inning, giving the Hoyas a 3-0 advantage.ย
UConn got on the board in the top of the 3rdย inning off the bat of Savannah Ring as she ripped a double to left center field, scoring pinch runner Isabella Lundquist from third base to make it 3-1.ย
Georgetown extended their lead in the bottom of the 4thย inning, plating three runs to push the Hoyas lead to 6-1.ย
UConn's offense erupted for seven runs in the top of the 5thย inning, sending 11 batters to the plate to give the Huskies their first lead of the game at 8-6. Kaitlyn Kibling jump started the rally with a double to left field, scoring Caylee De Meo and Heidi Barber. Two batters later, Haley Coupal delivered a double into the left center field gap, scoringย Kiblingย andย Ringย to make it a one-run game, 6-5. Emma Willers gave UConn the lead for good with a two-out single to right field, scoringย Coupalย and Ava Calciano.ย De Meoย capped off the Huskies big inning with her second double of the game, a towering shot off the top of the wall in left field, scoringย Willersย from second base to give UConn a two-run advantage, 8-6.ย
Graduate Jessica Walter came on in relief forย Bohmerย in the 5thย inning, making her team-leading 35thย appearance of the season.ย Walterย was dominant out of the bullpen, retiring six of the eight batters she faced, giving up just one hit to the Hoyas across 2.1 innings.ย
Kaitlyn Breslin added a pair of runs to UConn's lead in the top of the 6thย inning with a single to right center field, scoring Cat Petteys andย Coupalย to make it 10-6.ย
Coupalย broke the game open in the top of the 7thย inning with a grand slam to center field, her first home run of the season, ballooning UConn's lead to 14-6.ย
Sophomore Alexandra Bacher came on in relief forย Walterย during the 7thย inning, making her 15thย appearance this season.ย Bacherย locked down the final two outs of the game, securing the series opener for the Huskies.ย ย ย
