Huskies Split Doubleheader Against Providence

STORRS, Conn. – The UConn softball team split their doubleheader against the Providence Friars on Saturday afternoon at Burrill Family Field. Providence secured the series win, taking game one, 4-3 in eight innings. UConn bounced back in game two, defeating the Friars, 12-4 in six innings, salvaging the series. The Huskies move to 13-5 in BIG EAST play and 22-24 overall this season.
Game One
Redshirt-junior Sydnee Koosh made her 10th start of the season in game one for the Huskies. Koosh went 4.1 innings giving up one run on six hits with a pair of strikeouts.
Providence jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning. Koosh settled in after the 1st inning, keeping the Friars scoreless for the next four innings.
UConn responded in the bottom of the 1st inning with back-to-back two-out RBI doubles to take the lead. Cat Petteys hit the first double down the left field line, scoring Kaitlyn Kibling from second base. Haley Coupal scored Petteys with a double to left center field, putting the Huskies in front, 2-1.
UConn extended its lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the 3rd inning as Savannah Ring scored Kibling from third base with a sacrifice fly to right field.
Graduate Jessica Walter came on in relief for Koosh during the 5th inning, making her 31st appearance of the season.Walter went 2.1 innings giving up two runs on four hits, adding one strikeout.
Providence tied the game at 3-3 with two runs in the top of the 7th inning, sending the game to extra innings.
Sophomore Amber Bretton came on in relief for Walter to get the final out in the 7th inning, making her 14th appearance this season. Bretton stranded the bases loaded to keep the game tied.
Freshman Caprice Bohmer came on to pitch the 8th inning, making her 29th appearance of the season.
Providence took the lead in the top of the 8th inning, scoring a run to make it 4-3.
UConn continued to battle, putting the tying run in scoring position in the bottom of the 8th inning, but the Huskies could not find a key hit to prolong the game.

Game Two
Sydnee Koosh got the nod in game two for the Huskies making her second consecutive start, marking her 11th start of the year. Koosh delivered another solid start in the circle, going 4.2 innings, giving up three runs on eight hits with two strikeouts.
UConn jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st inning as Kaitlyn Kibling hit a leadoff triple, setting up Savannah Ring to bring her home on a single to third base.
UConn extended its lead in the bottom of the 2nd inning with back-to-back home runs coming with two outs. Heidi Barber hit the first, a two-run shot to left field, her third of the season, pushing the Huskies lead to 3-0. Kibling followed Barber with an inside the park home run to center field, marking her sixth of the year to give UConn a 4-0 advantage.
Providence got on the board in the top of the 3rd inning with a run to make it 4-1.
UConn answered right back in the bottom of the 3rd inning with Emma Willers scoring Ava Calciano from third base on an RBI ground out to second base, pushing the lead to four once again, 5-1.
Providence began to chip away at the Huskies lead, scoring a run in the 4th and 5th innings, making it a two-run ballgame at 5-3.
Amber Bretton came on in relief for Koosh during the 5th inning, making her second appearance of the day and 15th this season. Bretton pitched the rest of the game in the circle for the Huskies going 1.1 innings, giving up one run on two hits, adding a pair of strikeouts.
Willers extended UConn's lead in the bottom of the 5th inning with her fourth home run of the season, a two-run shot to right field, ballooning the Huskies advantage to 7-3.
Providence got a run back in the top of the 6th inning to trim into UConn's lead, 7-4.
UConn's offense put up a five spot, all coming with two outs in the bottom of the 6th inning, ending the game in a run-rule victory. The Huskies loaded the bases for Calciano who brought home two runs with a single to second base, scoring Ring from third base and aggressive base running by Cat Petteys, scoring all the way from second base. Two batters later, Caylee De Meo hit an RBI single to left field, scoring Kaitlyn Breslin from third base, pushing the lead to 10-4. Barber capped off a career day at the plate with a two-run single to third base, scoring Willers from third base and the winning run Calciano from second base, giving Barber a career high four RBI in the win.
