UConn, North Carolina to Face off in NCAA Sweet 16

FORT WORTH, Texas ā The top-seeded UConn women's basketball team (36-0) takes on fourth-seeded North Carolina (28-7) in the NCAA Women's Basketball Championship Sweet 16 on Friday at 5 p.m. ET/4 p.m. CT in Dickies Arena. The game will air on ESPN, Westwood One and the UConn Sports Network from Learfield (FOX Sports 97.9).
UConn enters the NCAA Tournament as a No. 1 seed for the 23rd time in program history and as the No. 1 overall seed for the 15th time in program history. The Huskies are competing in an NCAA-record 32nd straight Sweet 16. UConn is 28-3 all-time in the Sweet 16.
UConn is 144-24 overall in the NCAA Tournament, which is the winningest record in the sport. The Huskies won the 2025 NCAA Championship, the program's 12th title.
Graduate student Azzi Fudd matched her career high with 34 points and eight three pointers as UConn posted a dominant 98-45 win over Syracuse in the Second Round.
Fudd shot 13-for-18 from the field and led with five assists and four steals in her final game in Gampel Pavilion. The Huskies went on a 31-0 run in the first half and took a 65-12 lead into halftime.
UConn is 9-5 all-time vs. North Carolina and has won the seven meetings between the teams. The teams last faced off on Nov. 15, 2024, in Greensboro, N.C., a 69-58 win for the Huskies. North Carolina native Sarah Strong had 14 points, 13 rebounds, six assists and five blocks.
North Carolina beat No. 5-seed Maryland, 74-66, in the Second Round. This season, Nyla Harris leads the Tar Heels with 11.5 points per game and 6.9 rebounds per game. Four Tar Heels are averaging double-digit points. Head coach Courtney Banghart is in her seventh season at North Carolina.
