WILMINGTON, N.C. - The UConn baseball team (4-7) gave up six runs in the eighth inning to drop the rubber game of the series at UNCW (7-5), 7-2, on Sunday at Brooks Field.
The Huskies led 2-1 entering the bottom of the eighth inning, with the bases loaded and two outs. With UConn closer Sean Finn in the game, a wild pitch tied the game and after a walk reloaded the bases, Finn walked in the go-ahead run to give the Seahawks a 3-2 lead. Garret Garbinski came on and gave up three-straight hits to bring in four runs to separate the Seahawks, 7-2.
UConn scored its lone runs of the game on a Nater Wachter two-run homer in the sixth inning. Chris Polemeni finished the day with three hits for the Huskies.
UConn starting pitcher Oliver Pudvar was solid on the mound, going 5.0 innings, allowing one run and striking out seven.Â
Greg Shaw kept the Huskies ahead with 2.0 scoreless innings of work.
UConn will play its home opener on Wednesday, March 4 at 3:05 p.m. against New Haven.
