Menzel Hits For Cycle, Huskies Defeat New Haven

STORRS, Conn. - The UConn baseball team (5-7) defeated New Haven (0-7), 9-4, on Wednesday afternoon at Elliot Ballpark.
The March 4th home game in Storrs is the earliest UConn has ever played a game in program history.Â
More history was made during the contest with Evan Menzel hitting for the cycle as part of a 4-5 effort at the plate. It is the first time a UConn player has hit for the cycle since Brian Esposito on April 15, 1999 against Holy Cross.
Menzel doubled in the first inning, singled in the third, tripled in the seventh and hit an inside the park home run in the eighth. The inside the parker pinned up against the bottom of the left field fence and the New Haven left fielder reached in to pick it up but realized he might not be able to pull it out and put his arms up. Menzel kept motoring around the bases until he crossed home plate with his first home run as a Husky.Â
RHP Tristan Aasland got the start for the Huskies and earned his first win in a UConn uniform. The Snoqualmie, Wash. native fired 5.0 shutout innings with a season-high five strikeouts..
RHP Charlie Hale followed with 3.0 scoreless innings of work.Â
Freshman Cam Righi posted a multi-hit effort on Wednesday with RBI single to get the scoring going in the second and added an RBI double in the Huskies five-run eighth inning.Â
Jackson Marshall hit his team-leading third home run of the season in the third inning.Â
Next up, the Huskies head to Norfolk, Va. for a three-game series at Old Dominion beginning Friday, March 6 at 3 p.m.
