The first period began with both teams battling, generating multiple scoring chances but ultimately the defense and goaltending shined early keeping the game 0-0. Midway through the first period, the minutemen crashed the net and thought they scored but after an officials review, the puck did not cross the goal line. Late in the first period, Massachusetts found the back of the net, giving them the 1-0 lead heading into the second period.
The second period began with the Huskies coming out strong. The Huskies thought they found the equalizer when Alexandre Blais was in front for a tip in goal, but after review the officials did not have a clear angle as the call on the ice stood as no goal. Following that play, the Huskies were awarded a power play and on the ensuing faceoff, Joey Muldowney collected the puck and fired a shot for the game tying goal. With the goal, Muldowney becomes the programs leading goal scorer in the Hockey East era with 50 total goals. The Huskies were awarded another power play but after an onslaught of shots, were unable to find the back of the net. The Huskies didn't stop there as Trey Scott fired a shot from the blue line that found the back of the net, giving the Huskies their first lead of the weekend. UMass didn't go away quietly as they found the equalizer with 46 seconds remaining in the period tying the game at two heading into the third period.
The third period began with a UConn power play, but the Huskies power play was unable to find the back of the net for the lead. Shortly after the power play expired, Jake Percival took the puck mid ice and after beating his defenders, beat Hrabal for the wrap around goal giving UConn the 3-2 lead. UMass responded immediately tying the game once again. Both teams continued trading opportunities in the third period. Neither team was able to find the back of the net in regulation resulting in a sudden death OT period.
In the overtime, both teams had opportunities to win it. The Huskies maintained possession early in overtime but were unable to net the winning goal. Massachusetts followed that with possession of their own, but Tyler Muszelik stayed strong in net. The Huskies had an opportunity to end it as a 2-on-1 break occurred following a Muszelik save but the lights in the Mullins center went dark on the breakaway stopping action. Neither team found the back of the net in OT. IN the shootout after seven rounds, UMass found the back of the net to receive the extra point.
