Huskies Fall on Day Two at the Lowcountry Classic

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – The UConn softball team dropped two tightly contested games on day two of the Lowcountry Classic on Saturday at Patriots Point. UConn fell 1-0 to Akron in game one. The Huskies lost, 2-1 to College of Charleston in game two. UConn moves to 2-6 overall this season.
Game One
Redshirt-junior Sydnee Koosh (Canton, Ohio) earned her first start of the season in the circle for the Huskies. Koosh went 4.0 innings giving up two runs on three hits, adding a pair of strikeouts.
Akron jumped out to an early leading, scoring a run in the 1st and 2nd innings, giving the Zips a 2-0 advantage.
Despite a challenging first two innings, Koosh managed to settle in for the Huskies, tossing two straight scoreless innings.
Graduate Jessica Walter (Middletown, Del.) came on in relief for Koosh in the 5th inning, making her fifth appearance of the season. Walter kept the Zips lineup at bay, tossing 2.0 scoreless innings in relief for the Huskies, adding two strikeouts.
UConn's offense struggled to manufacture runs against Akron's starting pitcher, Madie Jamrog who went all 7.0 innings in the circle for Akron.
News and Notes
- The UConn pitching staff limited Akron to a season low three hits, marking the second straight game they have held opposing lineups to fewer than five hits.
- Savannah Ring extended her hitting streak to five straight games.
- Jessica Walter has not given up a run in her last three consecutive appearances (8.1 innings).
- The UConn offense was shutout for just the second time this season.
Game Two
Freshman Caprice Bohmer (Ashburn, Va.) got the start in game two for the Huskies, making her third start of the season. Bohmer went the distance going 6.0 innings, giving up two runs on four hits with five strikeouts.
College of Charleston opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the 1st inning, giving the Cougar a 1-0 lead.
Bohmer settled in after the 1st inning, tossing three consecutive scoreless frames, and retiring seven straight hitters in a row.
College of Charleston extended their lead in the 5th inning with a run, making it 2-0.
UConn's offense manufactured their only run of the game in the 6th inning as sophomore Cat Petteys (Vestal, N.Y.) beat out an infield single, scoring Ava Calciano (Lewes, Del.) from third base, trimming into the Cougars lead, 2-1.
UConn's offense continued to battle, putting the tying run in scoring position in the top of the 7th, but the Huskies could not find a key hit.
