CHARLESTON, S.C. – The UConn softball team closed out the Lowcountry Classic with a loss to Western Carolina, 2-1 in extra innings on Sunday morning at the CSU Softball Complex.

Graduate student Jessica Walter (Middletown, Del.) made her third start of the season in the circle for the Huskies. Walter went 4.0 innings giving up one run on just two hits, adding four strikeouts.

UConn opened the scoring in the top of the 3^rd inning as sophomore infielder Cat Petteys (Vestal, N.Y.) hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Bella Cruz (North Bellmore, N.Y.) from third base.

Western Carolina responded in the bottom half of the 3^rd inning with a run to knot the game at 1-1.

After the third inning, the game settled into a pitcher's duel, as both teams combined for just three hits over the final five innings.

Freshman Caprice Bohmer (Ashburn, Va.) came on in relief for Walter in the 5^th inning, making her fifth appearance of the season. Bohmer would pitch the rest of the game for the Huskies, going 3.1 innings with one run given up on just one hit with a pair of strikeouts.

With both pitchers commanding each lineup, the game remained locked in a 1-1 stalemate, forcing extra innings. Western Carolina went on to score the winning run in the bottom of the 7^th with a sacrifice fly.

News and Notes

Bella Cruz recorded her second multi-hit game this season. Cruz has logged hits in three of her last four games.
Alexis Juhl recorded her first career multi-hit game.
Cat Petteys has recorded an RBI in three of her last four games.
UConn left nine runners on base.
