UConn Falls to Marquette in BIG EAST Opener

STORRS, Conn. - UConn fell 0-3 to Marquette in its first BIG EAST match of the season Friday evening at the UConn Volleyball Center. The Huskies recorded 34 kills, 31 assists, 25 digs and eight blocks in the match.
The Huskies' main push in the opening set came after falling behind 10-8, when Maja Daca's service turn helped produce four straight points and a 12-10 lead behind a Sydney Borowy kill, two Daca aces and an Audrey Jensen-Grayson block. Grayson added a kill to put the Huskies ahead 13-11, but Marquette later moved in front and finished the set, 25-22.
UConn could not hold an early 8-3 lead in the second set, as Marquette came back to tie the score at 12-12 and moved in front, 13-12. Borowy helped the Huskies answer with four kills in the set, including one that made it 20-16, but Marquette closed out the set, 25-17.
The Huskies continued to battle in the third set, with Helena Einarsdottir at the service line, as a Daca kill, two Marquette attack errors-including one following a Grayson/Isabella Sohl block-and a Grayson kill helped UConn cut an 18-9 deficit to 18-13. Earlier in the set, Daca served consecutive aces to pull the Huskies even at 4-4. Marquette answered the late push with four straight points and finished the set, 25-15.
Borowy led UConn with nine kills, followed by Daca with eight and Einarsdottir with six. Daca also recorded a team-high four aces, while Grayson led UConn with six blocks, followed by Audrey Jensen with three and Jordyn Hughes with two. Jensen paced the Huskies with 23 assists, while Hazuna Akishige and Isabella Sohl each added three. Daca and Akishige each recorded seven digs, while Einarsdottir added four.
UConn returns to the court tomorrow at 4 p.m. to take on the DePaul Blue Demons.
