Huskies Storm Back to Beat No. 9 Clarkson

STORRS, Conn. – No. 12 UConn women's hockey overcame a 2-0 deficit to defeat No. 9 Clarkson, 3-2 in Friday's home opener at the Toscano Family Ice Forum. The Huskies scored twice in the second period, and once in the third to earn their first victory of the season, improving to 1-2.
Clarkson jumped out to an early lead with Sara Manness opening the scoring just six minutes into the game. UConn goaltender Taylor Belchetz kept the Huskies within one through the middle of the period, making several saves during a flurry of Clarkson chances. Belchetz finished the period with nine saves.
Later in the period, the Golden Knights doubled their lead with six minutes remaining, putting the Huskies behind 2-0.
Clarkson carried its two-goal advantage into the first intermission while holding an 11-6 advantage in shots.
UConn came out strong in the second period, turning its early pressure into a goal seven minutes in when junior forward Claire Murdoch scored her first of the season to cut the deficit to 2-1. Murdoch has recorded a point in each of UConn's first three games this season.
The Huskies continued to press through the middle of the period, with Clarkson goaltender Aneta Senkova saving several UConn chances.
With six minutes remaining in the second period, freshman forward Caileigh Tiller tied the game at 2-2 with her second goal of the season. Tiller has recorded a point in each of her first three collegiate games.
The score remained even at 2-2 heading into the second intermission with UConn dominating the shot count, 17-7, in the period.
Senior forward Julia Pellerin scored the game-winning goal with just under seven minutes left to play, giving UConn its first lead of the game at 3-2. The goal marked Pellerin's second this season and her first game-winner in her senior campaign. She has recorded a point in each of her first three games this season.
UConn was edged 31-30 in shots on goal but held advantages in faceoffs and blocked shots. The Huskies 20 blocked shots were a season high. UConn won 29 faceoffs to Clarkson's 23. Both teams went 0-for-1 on the power play and were assessed one minor penalty for two minutes.
Caileigh Tiller scored a goal, added an assist, and won a season-high 13 faceoffs at a 61% clip. The performance marked Tiller's first career multi-point game. Murdoch also finished with a goal and an assist on two shots, giving her a team high five points this season. Belchetz recorded 29 saves in goal, marking the second consecutive game she has recorded 25+ saves.
