ST. CLOUD, Minn. – No. 7 UConn women's hockey lost to St. Cloud State, 4-2 in its season opener Friday at Torrey Arena.
It took UConn just two minutes and 20 seconds to score its first goal of the season with senior forward Julia Pellerin putting the Huskies in front with an early 1-0 lead.
St. Cloud tied the score at 1-1 with just over two minutes remaining in the first period.
The score remained tied heading into the first intermission, with UConn holding a 7-6 edge in shots.
St. Cloud took control early in the second period, scoring two goals in the opening six minutes to take a 3-1 lead.
UConn cut the deficit to one when freshman defender Chelsea Tiller scored to make it 3-2 with six minutes remaining in the period. The goal marked the first of Tiller's collegiate career.
St. Cloud responded with its third goal of the period just two minutes later, once again making it a two-score deficit for the Huskies.
The second period concluded with St. Cloud holding a 4-2 lead, despite UConn holding a 14-8 advantage in shots in the frame.
The Huskies threw everything they had at St. Cloud in the third period but could not find a way past St. Cloud netminder Emilia Kyrkkö.
UConn outshot St. Cloud 29-22 and won 33 out of 51 faceoffs. Neither team had a power-play opportunity or penalty minute. St. Cloud held a 9-6 edge in blocked shots.
Pellerin scored and finished with a season-high of eight shots and a +2 rating. Chelsea Tiller added a goal on two shots. Claire Murdoch recorded two assists and three shots. Caileigh Tiller had an assist and won 11 faceoffs at a 64% rate.
