EAST Meadow, N.Y – The UConn men's hockey team began the new year with a convincing 3 - 1 win over Long Island University. The Huskies scored three goals in the second period while senior Tyler Muszelik made 26 saves in the win.
The first period began with both teams battling. LIU jumped the Huskies early, playing physical hockey and maintaining possession of the puck for long stretches. After weathering the early storm from LIU, the Huskies found their stride but were unable to find the back of the net. Both teams' defenses shined in the period as neither team was able to score before the period concluded. Senior Tyler Muszelik finished with nine saves in the period.
UConn found their offensive stride in the second period, exploding for three goals. The Huskies offense started on the power play and senior Ryan Tattle scored the first for UConn as he collected his own rebound and fired it back on net sneaking it past the LIU netminder. Later in the period, the Huskies pressure paid off as freshman Alexandre Blais collected the loose puck in front of the net and was able to push it past the extended leg of Daniel Duris for the Huskies second of the afternoon. Shortly after the second goal, UConn's forecheck created a turnover and with the goaltender out of position, freshman Carlin Dezainde was able to find the net for the Huskies third goal. LIU had opportunities to cut into the UConn lead as two penalties gave the Sharks back-to-back power plays, but it was UConn who looked to capitalize as the Huskies penalty kill created two shorthanded breakaways, both which were denied by Duris keeping the UConn lead at three.
UConn looked to carry the momentum gained from the second period into the third but netminder Daniel Duris turned away early opportunities from the Huskies. With the three-goal lead, the Huskies defense shined, limiting the LIU offense and preventing them from finding the back of the net. With two minutes remaining, LIU found the back of the net as a shot from the point snuck under the leg of Tyler Muszelik to cut the UConn lead to two. Following the goal, LIU pulled their netminder in favor of an extra skater but were unable to find the back of the net as UConn secured the 3-1 victory.
UP NEXT: UConn will turn their attention back to Hockey East action as they are set to begin a home and home series with UMass Lowell. The Huskies will host the Riverhawks in Hartford on Jan. 9 before traveling to Lowell for a game on Jan. 10.
