STORRS, Conn. — UConn men's hockey defeated no.17 Penn State 3-1 Friday evening. UConn's Kam Hendrickson totaled 42 saves as the team scored once in each period to secure the season and home opener win.
Penn State held a 22-10 edge in shot attempts in the first period, but Kam Hendrickson made 10 saves to keep the visitors off the board. Midway through the first period, freshman William McIsaac scored the Huskies first goal of the 2026-27 season as Mike Murtagh and Ethan Gardula connected on strong passes before the McIsaac finish. Penn State was unable to find the equalizer as UConn entered the break with the 1-0 lead.
Penn State would not be held scoreless for long as they continued to battle until Kale Dach's even-strength goal made it 1-1 following a poke in goal in a scrum in front of the net. The Huskies continued to battle, and it paid off as captain Joey Muldowney found the back of the net with 4:25 left to put the Huskies ahead 2-1 entering the third.
Penn State generated more third-period pressure, putting 16 shots on goal to UConn's 11 and winning 16 of 23 faceoffs, but Hendrickson stopped every shot he faced in the frame. Late in the period, Penn State found the back of the net in what would have been the equalizer, but a challenge from the Huskies was successful and the goal was overturned due to goaltender interference. With under two minutes remaining in the game, Penn State pulled their netminder in favor of an extra skater, and on a faceoff in the UConn zone, Carline Dezainde poked the puck free where it was collected by Kaden Shahan who skated the length of the ice for the empty net goal, sealing the 3-1 win for UConn. Sophomore Kam Hendrickson finished with 42 saves while allowing one goal securing his first win of the 2026-27 season, and second win of his career.
