PROVIDENCE, R.I. – No. 6 UConn women's hockey defeated the Providence Friars, 4-1 on Friday afternoon at Schneider Arena. Four different Huskies found the back of the net as UConn moves to 7-1-1 in Hockey East play and 14-3-2 overall this season.
UConn goaltender Tia Chan continued her dominant play from the first half of the year, contributing 31 saves in the win, marking her ninth 30+ save performance this season.
UConn's Brooke Campbell opened the scoring six minutes into the first period, her fifth goal of the season, giving the Huskies a 1-0 advantage.
Providence leveled the score late in the first period, knotting the game at 1-1 heading into the first intermission. Shots favored the Huskies in a penalty-less first period, 14-9.
UConn regained the lead in the second period with a power-play goal by Julia Pellerin, her seventh of the season, putting the Huskies back in front, 2-1.
The period was marked by back-and-forth play, with both teams generating multiple chances but failing to convert due to solid defensive efforts and goaltending. Chan made several key saves for the Huskies, keeping Providence from equalizing. A late penalty on the Friars gave UConn another power play opportunity, but they were unable to capitalize before the period ended. Shots once again were in advantage of the Huskies, 10-5 in the second period.
Sadie Hotles extended the Huskies lead seven minutes into the third period with her second goal of the season, giving UConn some breathing room at 3-1.
UConn maintained offensive pressure throughout the final period, but Providence's goaltender made several saves to keep her team within reach. With three minutes remaining in the game, the Friars pulled their goaltender in favor of an extra skater on the ice. UConn's Claire Murdoch capitalized with an empty-netter, her fifth goal of the season, sealing the victory at 4–1.
