No. 6 UConn Blanks Providence, Sweep Weekend Series

STORRS, Conn. – No. 6 UConn women's hockey shutout the Providence Friars, 5-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Toscano Family Ice Forum. A dominant three-goal first period propelled the Huskies to a series sweep of Vermont, their third weekend conference series sweep this season. UConn moves to 8-1-1 in Hockey East play and 15-3-2 overall this season.
UConn goaltender Tia Chan was stout throughout, picking up her third shutout of the season, making 31 saves in the win. For Chan, this marks her 10th game this season posting 30+ saves.
UConn took control early, scoring the game's opening goal just six minutes into the first period as Sadie Hotles found the back of the net for the second consecutive game, giving the Huskies a 1-0 lead.
Ten minutes later, Kyla Josifovic doubled the UConn lead with her team leading, ninth goal this season, extending the Huskies lead to 2-0.
Megan Woodworth capped off the dominant opening period for the Huskies with her sixth goal of the season, making it 3-0. Shots favored UConn in the first period, 14-12.
The second period featured a defensive battle as neither UConn nor Providence managed to convert on numerous opportunities. Providence applied pressure early with several shots, but the Friars were unable to break through. UConn's defense, led by Camryn Grimley and True Thompson, effectively blocked shots to maintain the lead. Both teams' goaltenders made crucial saves throughout the period, maintaining the 3-0 scoreline into the final intermission. UConn edged out Providence in shots in the second period, 11-10.
UConn's defense continued to hold strong, led by Chan who made nine saves in the third period. Providence pulled their goaltender in favor of an extra skater with three minutes to go in the third period, giving Woodworth another opportunity on goal. The senior buried her second goal of the game, her second multi-point performance this season, extending the lead to 4-0.
Just one minute later, Claire Murdoch found the back of the net for her sixth goal of the season, sealing the win for the Huskies. Murdoch has now scored a goal in three of her last four games.
