STORRS, Conn. - The UConn women's soccer team (5-2-1) defeated St. John's (2-4-2), 2-0, in front of 1316 on Saturday night at Morrone Stadium.Â
The Huskies led in all facets of the game, out shooting the Red Storm 17-5 and drew 11 corner kicks while giving up just two.Â
UConn took the lead late in the first half on a corner kick strike. Freshman Maree-Anne Van Doesburg placed a perfect ball inside the box that found the head of sophomore Taylor Jenkins. The Milford, Conn. native headed home the set piece to give the Huskies the lead in the 41st minute. It was the second-straight game that Jenkins has scored.Â
Just over a minute later, the Huskies added to their lead with a transition pass from sophomore Riley Prozzo. Her pass found a streaking Farrah Stephens-Martin and UConn forward was able to slide her shot past the keeper for her first career goal at UConn.Â
Van Doesburg and Prozzo also registered their first career assists.Â
UConn secured its fifth shutout of the season with the defense giving freshman goalkeeper Ava Yamas very little action. The Red Storm only had five total shots and Yamas only needed to make one save on the night.Â
Freshman Se-Hanna Mars had a strong night for the UConn offense with four shots in her 63 minutes of play and Chioma Okafor added three shot attempts for the Huskies.Â
The Huskies now take a season-long four-game win streak into a matchup against No. 23 Xavier on Wednesday, September 24 at Morrone Stadium, beginning at 7 PM.Â
