BIG EAST Play Arrives for WSOC

STORRS, Conn. - The UConn women's soccer team (4-2-1) begins BIG EAST Conference play with a pair of home games at Morrone Stadium. The Huskies host St. John's on Saturday, September 20 at 7 p.m. for Mental Health Awareness night and then welcome No. 23 Xavier on Wednesday, September 24 for White and Blue Night at 7 p.m. Both games will be streamed on ESPN+.
Fans should be aware that this year there will be $10 (cash only) parking in I Lot (adjacent to the stadium).Â
The Huskies are riding a three-game win streak with victories against Yale, Rhode Island and Maine. UConn has scored five goals in its last two matches, surpassing the three goals they scored in their first five matches of the season.
Two-time All-American Chioma Okafor leads the team with three goals and has scored in back-to-back games for the Huskies. Freshman Ava Yamas is coming off a BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week after securing a shutout last Thursday at URI and earning the win on Sunday vs. Maine.Â
St. John's enters Saturday's match with a 2-3-2 record. Madison Mariani and Jaylen Vallecillo are tied for the team lead with two goals a piece. The Johnnies are coming off a 0-0 draw against Boston College. UConn is 18-8-3 all-time against St.. John's and last season trailed 3-0 in the 33rd minute of the match. The Huskies rallied for a 3-3 draw, the first time UConn earned a result after trailing by three goals in a match.Â
Xavier is 5-2-1 on the season and ranked in the latest United Coaches Top 25 poll at No. 23. The Musketeers own a win against No. 17 Michigan State and are unbeaten in their last six matches.Â
The Huskies are 1-3-1 all-time against Xavier but last year tied 1-1 in Cincinnati before winning the BIG EAST Tournament Championship against the Musketeers in double overtime on the game-winning goal by Alayna Taylor.Â
